Wikipedia talk:How do I do this
I have a problem. I have a user Id (Deb) and a password, and I can login. But when I try to access "Preferences", I am told I am not logged in. Then I log in again, and I get a message telling me I am logged in. Then I try "Preferences" again, and get the same message telling me I am not logged in. My contributions are not recognised. What am I doing wrong, please? Deb (and I have the same problem, too!--firepink)
- Have you tried checking the box next to "Save the password as a cookie" on the login screen? AxelBoldt
Thank you, Axel - this resolved the problem. I wish I knew why. Deb
Sorry for this question but as a newcomer I haven't been able to solve it on my own. How do I link up the article I have contributed to others within Wikipedia that might be related? Ansdrew
If you want to create a link in your article to another Wikipedia article, you first need to find that article's exact title (with search), and then you put a text like [[World War II]] in your article to create the link. If you want the text of the link to be different from the title of the linked article, you can use the syntax [[World War II|Second World War]]. You can even create links to articles that don't exist yet, hopefully prompting others to fill the gap.
If you want to create links from other Wikipedia articles to your new article, you first surf around a bit to find the most appropriate Wikipedia articles (searching for your new article's title might be useful), and then edit them, adding a link pointing to your new article with the same syntax as above. Q. So, how do I change the entry heading for a topic? "TheLaw" is a topic and should be "Law".
A. Registered users can move a page: this moves the page content and edit history to a new title, and creates a redirecting page at the old title. This does not answer the question. It answers "Who may move a page?" and "What does moving a page do?" It does not answer "How do I move a page?" --FOo
Feel free to rewrite! (I find the "Move this page" link in the nav-bar is a sort of a clue :-) ) -- Tarquin
- I know the feeling FoO. I have never seen this move page feature either. --rmhermen
- Exactly. I'm guessing either it's not accessible to all registered users, or ... ? --FOo
- (Later): I get it. It's only available in the "Standard" skin, whereas I was set to the "Nostalgia" skin. This means that Wikipedia "skins" are not skins in the usual sense, since they change the features available rather than just making them look different!
