Notoriety

[edit]

I seem to remember the original game had a system whereby the player's character could become "wanted" for committing a crime. it would be good to have that mechanism and the possible resolutions explained in the article. 218.212.135.39 (talk) 20:31, 27 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

There were three legal statuses you could have - "Clean", "Offender", and "Fugitive" - in that order. Dealing in contraband (slaves, narcotics) would set you up as an Offender, and blasting innocent traders, Vipers and space stations would set you as a Fugitive. You could easily clean your status by going downtown at any multi-government or lower planet and cleaning up the pirates who would invariably gather there. Taking out Thargoids would also do the trick. Later versions such as ArcElite were a little more complicated and had weighted systems, but the original BBC and so forth were very straight forward, and it was possible to endlessly flip-flop between status in a single journey. Star Cruiser Reference?

[edit]

I think it seems necessary to compliment the header by including a Japanese market game that was possibly/potentially influenced by Elite, namely Star Cruiser. It references Wing Commander, X series, Freelancer, and some others, but it would be more varied to list another market that was influenced by this game's release, to highlight the scope of its innovation, especially since Elite and Star Cruiser share very similar premises and very similar gameplay styles. I don't want to turn this into a forum, but what does the term "Végan Malouin" mean? I'm not a native French speaker, familiar with the term and neither is Google. The only possible link I can find is Malouin (1803 ship) which was a privateer, so could be the reference? I'm thinking that in this context "végan" means stripped down or less than complete, but I lack the nuance. Chaheel Riens (talk) 18:51, 16 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Four colours or five?

[edit]
The original BBC version used a novel split screen approach to show four colours onscreen simultaneously;

I think this should be "five colours", if you add in black. Black, white, yellow, red, green. Five. Has this already been considered and rejected for any reason?
