Should ports on the Great Lakes that are regularly visited by ships that cross oceans be listed here? -- Mike Hardy

I believe so, yes. Stockton, California and Sacramento, California are on it and they're on rivers that flow into the Pacific. There should probably be a separate section for the Great Lakes, and those items which are in the Baltic should be moved out of the Atlantic and into their own section. -- Zoe

What about the ports along the Mississippi River? They do not all have ocean going ship facilities and handle barge traffic for just the river. Maybe the idea of merging is not a good one then. José is Fluid 04:43, 3 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

When seaport is merged with the more general port there's no problem. From the port article: "A port is a facility for receiving ships and transferring cargo to and from them. They are usually situated at the edge of an ocean, sea, river, or lake." This means that various wikipedia articles (ocean port, oceanport, sea port, seaport, river port, riverport, lake port, lakeport) will have to be redirected/disambiguated to port, provided that specific information on the type of port is provided in the port article.
