Plan on editing
[edit]Hi everyone! I am a student at VCU who grew up in Colonial Heights. I will be on working on this article for a class project. I am currently planning on making contributions to the Parks & Rec section specifically and maybe the politics section as well. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Finesslyn (talk • contribs) 19:41, 11 October 2021 (UTC)
Lakeview Dam and Lakeview Elementary
[edit]I grew up in Colonial Heights and read this entire history w/great interest! I have two comments and a question.
As a young girl, I lived at 702 Forest View Drive, and used to walk to Lakeview Elementary each day, traveling down Woodlawn Ave and passing the city dump along the way. This was between 1968 and 1972. The dump was adjacent to the dam, and we also used to play in the stream next to the dam as children. In 1994, I brought my two children to visit my home town and was absolutely delighted to discover that the dump had been transformed into a beautiful park!
While there, we visited Lakeview Elementary where, as it happened, they were setting up for their 25th anniversary celebration. Except that 25 years prior was my 2nd grade year, and I definitely attended school in 1968-1969! I tried to bring this to their attention but they insisted that they had not opened until the following year.
I lived in Colonial Heights with my family for a few years before I started school (I also went to "nursery school" in Hopewell) and distinctly remember my first grade year at Lakeview Elementary, where my teacher's name was Mrs. Gray. I wonder if anyone else can corroborate the opening of my elementary school, and whether anyone ever noticed the discrepancy?
