Chicago Tribune review
[edit]3/4 star review by Greg Kot of Chicago Tribune. Transcribed using Google News Advanced News Archive Search:
Madeleine Peyroux. Dreamland (Atlantic) (star) (star). Baduizm (Universal) (star) (star) (star). These two young singers have been hyped as Billie Holiday soundalikes, which is ludicrous. What next? They paint just like Picasso, fly like Dr. J, write like Joyce? There's no denying that Peyroux does a splendid impression of Lady Day's languorous drawl, and the spare, jazz-inflected accompaniment heightens the sense of dubious deja vu. Peyroux draws largely on a pre-rock language, covering songs by Bessie Smith and Edith Piaf, among others, but there is no sense at all on "Dreamland" that this gifted vocalist is anything but a remarkable clone. Erykah Badu also favors understatement on her debut album, but unlike Peyroux's disc, the material is almost entirely original, and it projects a complex, life-affirming perspective of African-American struggle and solace, humor and femininity. Rather than merely mimicking Holiday, Badu offers a canny update of the socially conscious soul of the early '70s with her midtempo grooves and sultry, conversational vocals.

USA Today review
[edit]Transcription using Google News Advanced News Archive Search. USA Today (Jones, Steve. 06.D. February 11, 1997) review of Baduizm (1997):
R&p;B: Erykah Badu, Baduizm (# # # 1/2) -- From this album's first note, it is evident that this self-assured singer/songwriter is not your average hip-hop diva. On songs such as Appletree and Certainly, she's firmly in control of her head and her heart. Though she shows soul, jazz and blues influences, unique phrasings give her a fresh sound. Hype comparing her to Billie Holiday is just that. But it hardly matters. Badu can be mesmerizing, and she has a singular style that sets her apart from the crowd.
